Bahrain’s Ministry of Municipalities Affairs & Urban Planning has expected to invite proposals for its residual waste-to-energy treatment plant in Q1 of 2023.

The project involves establishing and operating an incineration waste treatment plant with a maximum capacity of 1,306,510 tonnes per year. The plant will produce electricity, which will be supplied to the national grid through a power purchase agreement (PPA), as well as incinerator bottom ash, flue gas, and recyclable materials. The project will go through the following stages:

  1. Development, financing, engineering, procurement, construction, testing, and commissioning of the plant.
  2. Post-commissioning activities such as insurance, operation, and maintenance of the plant.

The project is expected to be completed by the Q2 of 2026, with an estimated cost of US$850 million.
