The municipality of Medellín in Colombia has approved a financing strategy for the Metro de la 80 project. The early works for the project are being co-financed by the National Government (70%) and the Municipality of Medellín (30%), and expected to cost COP3.5 billion (US$0.91 million).

In a market study organized by Financial National Development (FDN), private entities expressed a high interest in participating in the financing of the project. The alternative financing strategy proposed by FDN will be adopted in the selection process for the main contract of Phase III, which is expected to start in October 2021. Worth COP2.1 trillion (US$546 million), the contract involves engineering, construction of the line and supply of rolling stock, systems and equipment.

The Metro de la 80 project consists of a 13.25 km long light rail transit (LRT) system connecting the north of Medellin city to Aguacatala station with 17 stations in between. The line will also connect the current Medellín Caribe metro station. The metro line will provide a public space, commercial and retail shops, two vehicular lanes, circulation strip, and bi-directional bike path.
