The Malaysian government has said that the Chumphon - Ranong Land Bridge’s initial phase is expected to be completed in 2030.

The project entails establishing two deep-sea ports on Thailand's eastern and western coastlines, which will be interconnected by a comprehensive rail and road infrastructure. The eastern port is slated to be located in Chumphon province, bordering the Gulf of Thailand, while the other will be positioned in Ranong province, overlooking the Andaman Sea. Spanning across Thailand's southern Ranong province, the 90 km bridge is projected to be fully operational by 2039, with an estimated total expenditure of MYR 130 billion (US$ 27 billion).

Upon completion, the bridge aims to potentially redirect shipping traffic away from Malaysia and Singapore by establishing a new trade corridor connecting the Indian and Pacific Oceans. This initiative seeks to reduce transportation time through the Malacca Straits by six to nine days. Shipping routes from the Ranong port to destinations such as India, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe may see a reduction in transit time ranging from seven to 30 days, while travel from Southern China to the Ranong port is expected to take no more than five days.
