Georgia's economics ministry has announced that they received proposals only from China Communications to build a deep-water port in the Caucasus state of Georgia.
The Anaklia port project, initiated in 2016 with a US$2.5 billion budget, was initially undertaken by a consortium of America’s Conti International and Georgia’s TBC Holding. However, the project was halted in 2019 due to political controversies and arbitration disputes between the government and consortium members. In 2022, the government announced plans to revive the project and opened a call for bids, proposing a 51% government stake in the port with the remaining share available to investors.
China Road and Bridge Corporation and Qingdao Port International Co Ltd have been appointed as subcontractors for the port's construction. Given Georgia's strategic location on the eastern edge of the Black Sea, the port is essential for the Middle Corridor trade route between China and Europe, which bypasses Russia. The government has already set up a company to handle dredging and breakwater construction work.
