Chile launches multi-billion rail investment programme

The president of Chile announced plans for the largest railway investment in Chilean history - US$ 5 billion. "Chile Sobre  Rieles" programme would include 25 projects to modernise and expand the network. The aim is to add 1,000km of track, triple the number of users to 150m a year by 2027, and double the volume of freight carried to 21 million tonnes.

The program includes the following projects :

  • Alameda–Melipilla line, which is 61 km long
  • Rail link between Santiago, San Antonio, and Valparaíso
  • Santiago–Tiltil Metrotren, which is 48km urban rail scheme
  • A rail link to Arturo Merino Benitez Airport
  • An expanded network around Concepción in the south-central Biobío Region
  • A new link between Coronel and Lota
