The Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) and the CAF AM II Debt Fund is set to finance the educational infrastructure in 15 of Uruguay's 19 departments.
Through the Public-Private Participation Project (PPP) in Educational Infrastructure 2, the design, construction, and maintenance of 42 educational and sports centers (23 full-time schools, 9 technology poles, and 10 sports centers) will be financed, which will be distributed in 15 of the 19 departments of Uruguay. The Granting Public Authority of this project is the National Public Education Administration (ANEP).
The work was awarded in May 2018 to the company Infraestructura Educativa II SA, and the duration of the PPP contract is 22 years with the maximum term to complete the construction of all the centers of 36 months.
The total cost of the project is estimated at US$97 million and will be partially financed with resources provided by CAF (US$4.2 million) and the CAF AM II Debt Fund, managed by CAF AM Administradora de Activos Uruguay SA (US$42 Million ). The resources contributed by CAF and CAF AM will be in Indexed Units.
This project aims to provide education to a total of 4,500 children in 23 educational centers. The objective of the nine technological poles is to offer education, research, and services closely linked to local productive development in technical and technological areas, with a capacity of 400 students per center. In the case of the 10 sports centers, there will be an area of 2,129 sq.m. per center, equipped with changing rooms, court, equipment rooms and hygienic services. They are expected to function as recipients of students attending schools and high schools in the area of influence in addition to being used by the rest of the citizens outside of school hours.
Educational Infrastructure 2 is the second PPP financed by CAF after Educational Infrastructure 1, which demonstrates the continued support of the corporation for the development of education in Uruguay.
