Brazilan government intends to expand its infrastructure concession portfolio in coming year. The government has awarded 27 concessions in 2019 and it is looking to award 40 to 44 infrastructure concessions in 2020. The government wants to take advantage of favoring moments that are booming in the business sector to develop infrastructure in the country. Currently, the private initiative of government values approx. US$ 50 billion in assets.
Plans are being made to grant 22 airports through the private initiative in 2020, and leave the privatization of the other two biggest airports in Brazil for 2021 or early 2022: the Congonhas terminals (Sao Paulo) and Santos Dumont (Rio de Janeiro). Similarly, around 5000 km of the road network will be initiated in the road sector. In the railway sector, the West-East Integration project is set to be awarded in 2020.
The Brazilian government intends to grant infrastructure projects (ports, airports, roads and train tracks) through the private initiative in order to raise money to address the country's fiscal deficit, which this year is estimated at US$ 33 billion.
