Brazil's Minister of Infrastructure has announced the government's intention to concession a 40km section of the Trans-Amazonian Highway, also known as BR-230.
The section will link BR-163, an important route in the northern region for shipment of Brazilian grains, to the Miritituba fluvial port in Pará. It is one of five road concessions planned to be tendered this year.
The BR-230 Trans-Amazon Highway was inaugurated in 1970s but only a fraction of the nearly 3,000km route is in operation, with much of the existing highway in disrepair. The concession plan intends to overhaul the poor road infrastructure in the Amazon region.
