The government of Brazil has announced that it is planning to auction the Ferrogrão railway project in 2022.
The project involves the development of a 933 km long railway line connecting Mato Grosso and Pará. The railway will link Brazil's soybean-producing region to northern ports to ship the grains to Asia. A large business group has already investment plans for the railway concession.
The project was suspended before by the Federal Supreme Court due to the risk of deforestation in the region. The new plan proposes the construction of the railway 40 meters from an existing highway, minimizing environmental impact. In addition, the railway will replace the use of trucks for grain transportation, which will potentially lead to reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.
