The Government of Brazil through the Ministry of Mines and Energy has approved the development of Sao Francisco River Integration Project (PISF) under the Investment Partnership Program (PPI) as a priority project.

PISF involves the development of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels along the Sao Francisco River. The project will be used to generate energy for the pumping of water from the São Francisco River. The project to integrate the river with other Northeast river basins includes two 477-kilometer canals in order to ensure the water security of 12 million people in 390 municipalities in Pernambuco, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, and Paraíba. The project could generate up to 1 MWp of energy.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy, through the National Council for Energy Policy, is set to launch renewable energy auctions to attract private sector interest in the river transposition area. The whole initiative is expected to cost up to BRL15 billion (US$3.76 billion).
