The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) has approved financial support for BRL 185 million (USD 30 million) for the Natal International Airport Concessionaire, together with two other capital market investors, who contributed an additional BRL 75 million (US$ 12 million) through a public offering of incentivized debentures.
A total of BRL 260 million (USD 42 million) will fund the expansion, maintenance, and operations of Natal International Airport, a key gateway to Brazil's Northeast. Operated by Concessionária do Aeroporto Internacional de Natal SA, a subsidiary of Switzerland's Flughafen Zurich AG, the terminal will be managed for 30 years. This follows the company’s successful bid during the re-bidding auction in 2023. With a capacity to handle 6 million passengers annually, Natal International Airport currently accommodates around 2.3 million users per year. In 2024, the operator allocated BRL 33 million (US$ 5.3 million) to enhance infrastructure, security, IT systems, commercial areas, and passenger experience. Sustainability efforts significantly improved waste management, increasing landfill diversion rates from 15% to 85%.
The incentivized debentures project is scheduled for completion by December 2026, with an anticipated total investment of BRL 274 million (US$ 44.4 million) over the concession period. The concessionaire's business plan aims to attract international cargo and passenger routes, boosting tourism in Rio Grande do Norte. This expansion is being developed in collaboration with the state government. Additionally, the company announced the launch of direct flights between Santiago and Rio Grande do Norte to enhance connectivity.
