The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA) announced the contracting of non-reimbursable financial support of BR$ 45 million (US$ 7.8 million) from the Amazon Fund to the State of Pará to strengthen the structure of the Pará Military Fire Department and the corporation's actions in preventing and fighting forest fires and unauthorized burning.
In 2023, the Amazon Fund Steering Committee approved increased funding for fire prevention and combat projects in the Legal Amazon. The Pará State Fire Department project includes expanding and modernizing its vehicle fleet, acquiring protective equipment, and enhancing monitoring efforts. It also focuses on training public agents, local groups, and communities in fire prevention and response, conducting educational campaigns, and forming volunteer and community-based fire brigades to strengthen first-responder capabilities. These measures aim to enhance monitoring and early detection of fire outbreaks, improve response efficiency, and strengthen environmental inspections. The initiative also seeks to boost firefighter safety, reduce accidents, and expand efforts to combat illegal burning, deforestation, and forest degradation in Pará. Ultimately, the goal is to minimize forest fires and unauthorized burning across the state.
