The Ministry of Public Works has published the call for bids for the Second Concession of the La Araucanía Airport, a work located in the commune of Freire in the region of La Araucanía, Chile.

The project's scope entails a significant expansion, quadrupling the current airport surface from 5,570 m2 to 22,276 m2. Additionally, there will be an increase in vehicle parking spaces to 508 (from the current 356), commercial aircraft parking spaces to six (up from four), and apron surface for commercial aircraft to 42,994 m2 (compared to the current 22,770 m2).

Simultaneously, there will be an increase in the number of automatic check teams to seven (currently four). Four Investigative Police checkpoints for emigration and four for immigration will be established (currently one and two, respectively). The airport will now feature three SAG-Customs control points, as opposed to the current single point. The number of traditional counters (thirteen) will be maintained, and six automatic check modules will be introduced (currently three). The new concession also encompasses the development of new aeronautical facilities for the DGAC. Additionally, there will be an expansion and modification of the internal vehicular and pedestrian circulation roads, construction of new electrical installations and visual aids, expansion of the wastewater treatment plant, and replacement of all existing signage, along with the incorporation of new ones.

Commencement of facility construction is projected for 2027. If this timeline is adhered to, the operational launch of the new airport is anticipated in 2029.
