Bangladesh's State Minister for Finance and Planning has stated that the Khan Jahan Ali Airport project has been transferred to a PPP arrangement. The project, which involves the construction of a new airport in the Bagerhat district of Bangladesh, has been in development for many years, with a foundation stone laid in 1996.
However, all construction work stopped after 1997, until the government's Executive Committee of the National Economic Council approved a BDT5.44 billion budget for the airport in May 2015. The transfer to PPP reduces the budget to BDT2.17 billion.
A new construction deadline has been set for June 2020. The airport is to be located 25 minutes away from Bagerhat district town and will span over 530 acres. It is expected to boost eco-tourism and activity at Mongla Port.
