Balfour Beatty VINCI has made significant progress on a new green bridge to cross the HS2 high-speed railway near Kenilworth, Warwickshire.

The Stoneleigh Road bridge will feature a dual carriageway for vehicles and two nature corridors to facilitate wildlife movement across the railway. It is one of 16 green bridges on the HS2 route between London and the West Midlands. Measuring 33 meters long and 42 meters wide, piling work began in October 2023, with a peak team of 50 workers. Recent work includes installing 32 parapets and completing a large 1,900 cubic meter concrete pour for the deck slab in late 2024. With the main construction now finished, engineers will realign Stoneleigh Road over the bridge and build a new roundabout connecting to Stoneleigh Business Park’s main entrance. To support local wildlife, nine-meter-wide strips of hedgerows and vegetation will be planted on both sides of the road, creating a safe passage for birds, small animals, and insects.

The road realignment and nature corridor landscaping is set to be completed by autumn 2025, after which traffic will start using the bridge. Balfour Beatty VINCI is carrying out the project, which is responsible for constructing a 90-km section of HS2 from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to central Birmingham and into Staffordshire. HS2 is constructing over 500 bridge structures along its route, including more than 50 major viaducts spanning a total of 15 km across various landscapes. Construction is progressing rapidly between the West Midlands and London. Once completed, HS2 trains will operate on a dedicated high-speed line between these regions before continuing north via the existing West Coast Main Line.
