Airport investor and manager AviAlliance has increased its stake in Athens International Airport by 10% to reach just over 50% for a purchase price of EUR 293 million (USD 314.8 million).
Athens International Airport has demonstrated remarkable growth in Europe, with 28.2 million passengers recorded in 2023. This marked a substantial 24% increase compared to the previous year and a commendable 10% rise compared to 2019, the year preceding the COVID-19 pandemic. The airport's history traces back to 1996 when HOCHTIEF's airport division, later rebranded as AviAlliance, was granted a 30-year concession, in collaboration with consortium partners, for the construction, financing, and operation of the Greek capital airport. The airport officially opened its doors in 2001. In 2019, the concession for Athens International Airport was extended by 20 years, securing its operational rights until 2046.
AviAlliance stands out as a prominent global player in private industrial airport investment. Headquartered in Düsseldorf, the company actively engages in airport privatizations worldwide and secures concessions. The company's international airport network encompasses Athens, Budapest, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, and San Juan (Puerto Rico) airports. Collectively, these airports handled a significant total of 87.7 million passengers in 2023, further solidifying AviAlliance's position as a leading investor in the airport industry.
