The Government of Greece has announced a new EUR53.6 million (US$57.6 million) project to modernize and replace street lights in the Municipality of Athens.

The project includes the replacement of "traditional" lighting fixtures with a total of 43,679 new and modern lamps that will increase the safety of citizens, reduce costs and benefit the environment. The new network will consume only 7.5 GWh per year, which will cost EUR1.1 million (US$1.18 million) per year. Maintenance costs will be reduced from EUR300.000 (US$332.440) to EUR86.000 (US$92.432). The lights will be equipped with motion sensors, which will allow pedestrians to feel safer when walking through parks and squares at night. In addition, the municipality will install a warm light shade (3000K) that will minimize light pollution. Each of the 43,679 modern lighting fixtures can be controlled remotely. The network also automatically signals the presence of faults.

The project is scheduled to begin work in the summer of 2022.
