The National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) of Brazil has launched the Public Consultation for radio frequency bands that will allow the implementation of the fifth-generation (5G) technology in Brazil.
The development will be the largest frequency auction of Anatel. The Public Notice proposes the bidding of the 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz, 3.5 GHz, and 26 GHz bands and brings, as a novelty, the inclusion of another 100 MHz in the 3.5 GHz band.
The Agency's technical area confirmed the feasibility of these bands, which may provide reimbursement to satellite operators that operate in the so-called “extended C band”, which coincides with the 100 MHz.
With the addition of more bandwidth at 3.5 GHz - the main band for the development of 5G -, it will be possible to meet the demands that have been presented in a more comprehensive way, especially those of the Small Providers (PPP), which will be able to do part of the development of this new technology.
The commitments associated with all bands were proposed with the objective of increasing fixed broadband infrastructure and access to mobile services in areas of less commercial interest, as outlined by the Structural Plan for Telecommunications Networks (PERT).
Regarding the possible interference caused by 5G in the reception of open satellite TV (TVRO, from English Television receive-only), the approved proposal adopts a model similar to that used for the 700 MHz band, with the creation of a group coordinated by Agency and a third, independent entity to operationalize the solution. The proposal is in line with the public policy defined by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations, and Communications (MCTIC) through Ordinance 418/2020.
