The Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy in Albania has awarded a 35-year concession contract to reconstruct, operate and maintain Kukës Airport to a consortium of Global Technical Mechanics Ltd., Bami Ltd and Dutch company NACO.
Located in northeast Albania, the airport was completed in 2006, but has remained inoperative due to the government contract with Tirana International Airport, which was granted a monopoly of national airspace in 2004.
The airport in Kukës will become operational by the autumn of 2019. The reconstruction will involve the extension of the runway and an upgrade of the terminal building, with the airport to service flights of mainly low-cost carriers.
