Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan have signed a tripartite railway project connecting the 3 countries.
During a trilateral working group meeting held in Islamabad, the 3 countries, finalized the route for the Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (UAP) railroads project. Additionally, the parties reached an agreement on a 1-year project plan, in which foreign consulting firms will prepare project materials to be presented to international financial institutions and countries to attract investments.
This railway connection will connect Termiz in Uzbekistan, Mazar-i-Sharif and Logar in Afghanistan, and then enter Pakistan through the Kharlachi border crossing. This 760-km railway line is expected to significantly reduce goods delivery times between Uzbekistan and Pakistan, shortening it by approximately 5 days. Moreover, it is anticipated to bring about a minimum 40% decrease in the cost of transporting goods. The project is expected to be finished by the end of 2027, and by 2030 trains may be able to transport up to 15 million tons of cargo annually.
