The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced its commitment to support the strengthening and expansion of electricity infrastructure in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
The US$305 million project includes the expansion and upgrade of transmission lines, substations and construction of new low- and medium-voltage power distribution lines in Gazelle, Ramu and Port Moresby, as well as mini-grids in West New Britain.
The project will be funded by loans and grants from the Asian Development Bank and the governments of Australia and PNG, and will focus on five subprojects within PNG Electricity Limited's main power grids (PPL). The Asian Development Bank offered two loans totaling US$208.6 million, the Australian government donated a US$59.5 million loan and a US$12.8 million grant and the government of PNG will contribute US$24.1 million through PPL.
