The Government of Catalonia has ordered that Acciona vacate the premises through which it operates the Aigües Ter-Llobregat (ATLL) water concession by 31 December 2018. ATLL supplies drinking water to more than five million Catalans in 120 municipalities, including Barcelona.
Acciona was awarded the 50-year concession in November 2012. However, the award was cancelled following a lengthy court process due to irregularities and lack of transparency in the tender process.
Rather than re-tender the concession, the government announced in July that it ATLL would be managed by a public entity. The entity, Aigües Ter-Llobregat Supply Agency, will assume management of the service as of 1 January 2019.
