Highways England in the UK has submitted the Development Consent Order (DCO) report containing recommendation to the Secretary of State for Transport for the A 303 Stonehenge road project. The secretary will make a decision by July 17, 2020. Since the project is classified as a nationally significant infrastructure project, DCO is needed for permission to build.
Over the past eighteen months, the proposals have been examined by a panel of independent inspectors appointed by the Planning Inspectorate. The project will establish a dual carriageway between Amesbury and Berwick Down to replace the existing single carriageway, which runs past Stonehenge and through the village of Winterbourne Stoke. It will also involve a new junction west of Stonehenge, to ease congestion on the A303 and A360, as well as a link to Winterbourne Stoke.
More information regarding the project scope and development can be found here.
