The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDC) has opened technical bids for the construction of 2.5 km twin tunnels of the Aizawl Bypass project in Mizoram, India.
This twin-tunnel project, featuring two lanes and a 2.1 km long approach road, is part of Package 2 within the upcoming 34.5 km Aizawl Bypass initiative on National Highway NH-6. Connecting Sairang and Phaibawk villages, the bypass will include 10 major bridges and 1 minor bridge. The Central Government approved the construction of the tunnel section on January 4, 2024, with an estimated total cost of INR 13.1 billion (USD 158 million). The tunneling process will employ the drilling and blasting method, and tunnel boring machines (TBMs) will not be utilized. This project involves the construction of a Twin Tube Uni-directional Aizawl Bypass Tunnel spanning 2.5 km, along with its approaches extending 2.1 km from km 10.600 to km 15.200 (Package-2) on the Sairang – Phaibawk section of NH-6 in the State of Mizoram, operating under the EPC Mode.
