The Government of Zambia has reached an important milestone in the infrastructure sector signing the first public-private partnership (PPP) contract in the country history.
The Government has selected Congo-based Groupe Europeen De Developpement (GED) to be responsible for the design, build, financing, operation and maintenance (DBFOM) of the 85 km Kaluba-Mwenda Road in Luapula province. The total investment for the project stands at US$180 million.
This road PPP in Zambia is part of the major Kasomeno-Mwenda project, which will connect the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia through a 180 km road.
According to sources, Minister of Finance Alexander Chikwanda said:
"When completed, the Kaluba-Mwenda road will provide an alternative and shorter route for cargo traffic from Lubumbashi through Nakonde to the port of Dar-es- Salaam."
