Flintshire County Council has finally awarded the North Wales Residual Waste Treatement PPP project in the UK to Wheelabrator.
In April 2014 we published that energy-from-waste specialist Wheelabrator had been named as the preferred bidder for the project after SITA UK abandoned the procurement process.
The project includes the design, build, finance and/or operation of a waste treatment facility. The contract includes the treatment of the rejects and residues from the solution and the purchase of the power produced by the facility.
The proposed facility will treat around 150,000 tonnes of residual household waste from the five counties per year, in line with the Welsh Governments target to recycle 70% of all waste by 2025.
The project will be backed with £142.7 million funding from the Welsh Government in the form of a £5.72 million subsidy each year over the service period of the contract. It will represent a total investment of around £700 over the lifetime of the project, which is estimated to be around 25 years.
