US$387.23 million Contract signed for extension of Light Rail Stage Project in Australia

The Public Transport Association of Canberra (PTCBR) has signed contracts to build and operate the Light Rail Stage 2A Project in Australia.

The extension of the light rail network to Commonwealth Park through Stage 2A will establish a much-needed mass transit connection between Civic and Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra. This phase will introduce various enhancements to the light rail network, such as green rail tracks, innovative intersection designs, secure cycling infrastructure, and advanced wire-free battery technology.

The Canberra Metro consortium, comprising CIMIC Group entities Pacific Partnerships, CPB Contractors, and UGL, has secured the contract for the delivery and operation of Stage 2A of Canberra's light rail system, connecting the city to Commonwealth Park. With a joint funding initiative by the Federal Government and the ACT Government, the AU$577 million (US$387.23 million) contract was awarded through a single select procurement process, generating around AU$227.5 million (US$152.67 million) in revenue for CPB Contractors and UGL. Canberra Metro is overseeing the project, building on its previous contributions to the City to Gungahlin route. This initiative includes the delivery of additional light rail vehicles with onboard energy storage batteries for wireless operation and an expansion of the existing depot. The Stage 2A extension, funded through an innovative green loan, is set to begin construction in January 2024, with a four-year timeline. The project aims to advance light rail connectivity to Woden and incorporates a sustainable approach, operating on 100% renewable electricity in Stage 1.
