Highways England in the UK has confirmed the inclusion of three consortia to bid for A303 Stonehenge road project. The A303 Stonehenge (also known as the A303 Amesbury to Berwick Down) project involves the construction of a twin-bored tunnel under Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, southwest England.
The project will establish a dual carriageway between Amesbury and Berwick Down to replace the existing single carriageway, which runs past Stonehenge and through the village of Winterbourne Stoke. It will also involve a new junction west of Stonehenge, to ease congestion on the A303 and A360, as well as a link to Winterbourne Stoke. The estimated investment required for the project is GBP 1600 million (US$ 1983.4 million). The road will increase the speed and capacity of the traffic flow as well as avoid passing through the Stonehenge monument.
The three consortia to bid for the project are as follows:
The project is part of the list of works that UK launched to improve the country's infrastructure after the Brexit. The Government has plans to invest GBP 27,000 million (US$ 33,604 million) between 2020 to 2025.
The National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) in the UK invited businesses, passengers, transport experts, and regional leaders to share their ideas for transforming the rail landscape of the north alongside the East and West Midlands and help create a lasting legacy from the construction of High Speed 2 (HS2).
