Tamil Nadu launches RFQ for Oceanarium PPP project

The Government of Tamil Nadu (India), through the Department of Fisheries, has launched a request for qualification (RFQ) to develop the Mamallapuram Oceanarium PPP project in Chennai.

The project involves the development of a World Class Oceanarium, which aims to offer a unique underwater experience consisting of an acrylic tunnel housing numerous marine species and other related facilities. The project will be located in a 13.94 acres site, of them 7.41 acres will be used for Oceanarium construction.

The project will be developed on a design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) basis.

The total project investment is estimated at Rs2.57 billion (US$41.3 million)

A pre-application conference will be hold on 20 April 2015 at the Department of Fisheries Conference Hall, Teynampet, Chennai. Interested parties must submit their qualification documents on or before 18 May 2015.

The Oceanarium apart from its commercial and educational supremacy will have alliances with the Universities and Marine Biology Research Centers to undertake marine biological research projects in collaboration with similar reputed centers around the world.

The project location, Mamallapuram, is a historical center for tourism. This tourist place recorded tourist visitation of 4.5 million including 0.5 million foreign tourists in 2013 as per the data collected from Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation.
