SYSTRA Ibérica, in a consortium with META Engineering, has won the contract to design the automatic systems, signaling, and platform facades for the central section of line 9 of the Barcelona metro.
The goal of ‘Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona’ (TMB) is to connect the northern and southern branches of the line with an 11 km underground section. Located in the heart of Barcelona, between the university district and Sagrera, the new tunnel will feature 11 stations, each equipped with 60 meters of screen doors to protect the platforms. Adding to the complexity, line 9 is the deepest in the Barcelona network, with tunnels reaching depths of up to 80 meters. The infrastructure construction was completed in the first half of 2024, and system installations are now underway, with full service expected by 2029.
Barcelona’s Line 9 currently comprises two sections:
By 2032, the complete route will enable passengers to reach the center of Barcelona quickly, certain bustling areas such as Camp Nou stadium and Sant Pau hospital, and the districts of El Prat de Llobregat, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, and Badalona.
A consortium led by Spanish contractor Obrascón Huarte Lain (OHLA) has won a contract worth EUR 95.7 million (US$ 102.8 million) for the construction of Subsection 1 of the northern section of Line 3 of the Seville Metro in Spain.
