Government of Canada issued request for qualification (RFQ) for the Edmonton Valley Line West Light Rail Transit project. Valley Line West is stage two of the Valley Line LRT, an urban-style 27-kilometre line that will operate between Mill Woods in southeast Edmonton and Lewis Farms in west Edmonton.
The Valley Line West LRT project consists of the second and next stage of the Valley Line construction. The project involves extending the line by approximately 14 kilometres from downtown Edmonton to the west-end community of Lewis Farms.
The project will include civil and structure works, systems and light rail vehicle supply and will be procured using as a Design-Build-Finance delivery model. Light rail vehicle supplier companies will be designated as non-exclusive suppliers for the purposes of the project procurement process, meaning no one supplier can be exclusive to a proponent team.
The project is expected to provide an LRT link to major destinations within the City, including Norquest College, MacEwan University, 124 Street, Meadowlark Mall, the Misericordia Hospital and West Edmonton Mall. This project aims to significantly improve Edmonton's LRT system by extending service to new areas, improving the rider experience, increasing accessibility, and laying the groundwork for future expansion and growth.
The total budget (including engineering, land etc.), is CAD$2.6 Billion. On November 1, 2018, the Government of Alberta committed $1.04 billion to the project. The Federal Government is evaluating the Project Business Case under the “Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program” funding program, with confirmation of funding approval anticipated by Spring 2019.
