Queensland completes business case for Cross River Rail project

Queensland Government, in Australia, has provided AUD800 million (US$595 million) to kick-off the construction of Brisbane's Cross River Rail project

The project involves a 10.2 kilometre rail link connecting Dutton Park in the south to Bowen Hills in the north, including twin 5.9 kilometre tunnels under the Brisbane River and CBD. The project will enable the delivery of new underground stations at Boggo Road, Woolloongabba, Albert Street and Roma Street and upgrades to existing stations at Dutton Park and Exhibition. It also includes conducting track works at Mayne Yard and repurposes the Exhibition Line from a special use line to a standard link in the rail network.

The project development is endorsed by the report carried out by state's independent infrastructure adviser Building Queensland. The AUD5.4 billion (US$4 billion) Brisbane's Cross River Rail project is considered the flagship project of Queensland infrastructure pipeline.

The initial funding for the project will be arranged through State Infrastructure Fund, which was already allocated AUD2 billion in the 2016-17 state budget as part of an AUD40 billion four-year infrastructure programmel. The government also contributed AUD50 million for the establisment of the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority and begin construction as soon as possible.

According to sources, the business case for Cross River Rail  project would be submitted to the federal government and Infrastructure Australia in order to secure federal funding. The extent of private sector involvement in the project is still under discussion
