John Laing, a member of the developer consortium of Ruta del Cacao road PPP project in Colombia has announced the completion of 2.2 kilometre La Sorda tunnel. The achievement was celebrated by the ANI, consortium team members and the Governor of Santander.
The milestone marks 60% completion of this tunnel and 51% of the project as a whole. Ruta del Cacao is 236 km of carriageway, connecting the cities of Bucaramanga, Barrancabermeja and Yondo in the Santander Department of North-East Colombia. With challenging terrain forming part of the project, tunnels and bridges are an essential part of the construction and will help to keep traffic flowing smoothly with minimal disruption to the local environment wherever possible.
The existing road is to be improved and rehabilitated, and new road carriageway to be developed running through ten municipalities - Bucaramanga, Lebrija, Girón, San Vicente de Chucurí, Sabana de Torres, Betulia, Barrancabermeja, and Yondó.
The estimated investment for the project is EUR 702.2 million (US$ 750.43 million). The concession period for the project is 25 years including 4 years for construction. The road is expected to open for public use in 2021.
Ruta del Cacao is also an outstanding example of our commitment to improving the lives of the local communities.
