Preferred bidder for CAD1.4bn bridge project in Canada

Province of British Columbia in Canada has selected a consortium of Fraser Crossing Partners, the partnership between Acciona Infrastructure Canada and Aecon Group Inc. to design, construct, and partially finance during construction, the new CAD 1.377 billion (USA 1.06 billion) Pattullo Bridge replacement over the Fraser River in the Greater Vancouver area.

The project includes the construction of the 5.7 km long new bridge as well as road and pedestrian connections around the bridgeheads to ensure the flow of traffic between New Westminster and Surrey. The Pattullo Bridge is a key connection between the communities of Surrey and New Westminster.

The new bridge will consist of four wider lanes for cars and commercial vehicles, separated by a central reservation and with a possibility to expand to six lanes. The new bridge also features dedicated pedestrian and cyclist lanes separated from traffic by a barrier on both sides of the bridge.

The construction will start this year and the bridge is scheduled for completion in 2023. Once opened, the new Pattullo Bridge will improve the safety for vehicular, cycle and pedestrian traffic. The existing deteriorating Pattullo Bridge built in 1937 will be removed as part of the project.

The Province will use a design-build-finance model to build the Pattullo Bridge replacement and the project will be funded and owned by the Province of British Columbia.

The winning consortium originally also featured SNC-Lavalin, which withdraw its participation in the bid in summer 2019. The company has announced in July that it is exiting lump-sum turnkey contracting and will reorganize the Company’s Resources and Infrastructure Construction segments into a separate business line following continued poor performance of these segments and will focus on engineering services.
