Egypt and the PPIAF (World Bank) invited expressions of interest in PPP tram feasibility study on January 13th. The PPIAF has awarded a grant at the request of the Government of Egypt, through the General Organization of Physical Planning of the Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, and the Bank is managing it.We've copied the announcement below here:
The Heliopolis tram system in Cairo has essentially reached a critical point where the rolling stock, infrastructure, and supporting systems need to be rehabilitated and/or replaced. There is also a pressing need to improve passenger transport services between Heliopolis and the rapidly developing New Cairo city, via Nasr City and the planned Government District, as in this travel corridor there are no existing or planned mass transit services. Government of Egypt therefore is intent at undertaking this investment so that the tramway line become as a major provider of passenger transport services over a total length of about 29 km.
Seeking a PPP arrangement appears attractive as a means to secure technically proficient concessionaires for maintaining and operating the system and possibly reducing to some extent up front public sector funding.
Unfortunately for consultants the expresion of interests were to be turned on January 24th.From the VIDEO below you can conclude how necessary a rehabilitation of the tram is.
