Plans announced for 117 km Canal del Dique rehabilitation PPP

Colombia's National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) has announced that the pre-qualification process for the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Restoration of Degraded Ecosystems of the Dock Channel will be opened in a short time. The project aims, among others, to improve the navigability between the bay of Cartagena and Calamar, on the Magdalena riverbank, along 117 kilometers.

In the prequalification process, legal, financial, and investment experience requirements will be checked to participate in the project tender which will be published in the Secop.

To be more specific, the project involves the rehabilitation of the Canal del Dique, which connects the Magdalena River, in the Bolivar Department, and Cartagena Bay. It serves up to 1.5 million inhabitants in 20 municipalities in the departments of Bolívar, Atlántico, and Sucre. The project is also set to restore the degraded ecosystem of the Canal.

In September 2019, we announced that ANI presented the rehabilitation project. During that presentation, the Colombian government stated that the project had the Hydrosedimentological Management Plan approved by the Environmental Authority that is essential in the structuring of the project.

Furthermore, the national government announced that the planned development would require up to COP2.3 billion (US$615 million) investment that is expected to be sourced from the National Government of Colombia.
