The government of Philippines, through the Department of Justice (DOJ), has given prospective bidders of the Regional Prison Facilities PPP project until May 29 to submit their pre-qualification documents.
As of date, three prospective bidders have shown interest in the project:
The proposed facility will accommodate 26,880 inmates, including staff housing and administrative buildings, areas for rehabilitation (sports, work and religious activity), and will be installed with high security equipment.
The project will entail the financing, designing, construction and maintenance of a modern prison facility. It will be developed under a Build-Transfer-Maintain (BTM) contractual arrangement
The total project investment is estimated at P50.11 billion (US$1124 million).
The prison will belong to the national prison system managed by the Bureau of Corrections under the DOJ. It will accommodate the transfer of inmates from New Bilibid Prison in Muntinupla and Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong, both of which are scheduled to be closed.
