Nine bidders showed interest in the US$394 million Railway modernization Project in Peru

The Private Investment Promotion Agency (PROINVERSIÓN) announced that the international bidding process for the modernization project of the Huancayo – Huancavelica Railway has nine interested companies that have purchased participation rights in Peru.

Companies aiming to qualify as potential bidders must satisfy several prerequisites, including the following:

  • a minimum of 10 years of experience within the past 20 years in the construction or rehabilitation of road infrastructure for rail transport or highways, with a minimum track length of 100 km;
  • operational experience, either through the operator or a technical advisor, in managing a railway transportation system that carries a minimum of 300,000 passengers annually and spans at least 100 km;
  • a minimum net worth of US$61 million after the last two audited annual financial years;
  • submission of legalized copies of the bidder's founding documents;
  • absence of sanctions imposed by the Peruvian State; and
  • compliance with other stipulated requirements.

The Huancayo-Huancavelica Railway, operational since October 1926, boasts a route of 128.7 km, encompassing seven stations, 20 stops, 15 bridges, and 38 tunnels, all of which are slated for modernization. The project aims to revitalize the infrastructure of the Huancayo-Huancavelica Railway, also known as the Tren Macho, by introducing new rolling stock and implementing an advanced signaling and control system. This overhaul is designed to ensure a secure, efficient, and comfortable transportation system for users, featuring seven daily circulations in each direction. Additionally, the initiative includes the construction of a new repair and maintenance workshop, implementation of a drainage system, protection and stabilization of slopes, and, crucially, the renewal of the railway superstructure.
