Nigeria´s minister of finance worried about the lack of PPP projects

According to the Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, the Federal Government is worried about the lack of public private partnership (PPP) projects.

She said that after a long period of underinvestment and poor maintenance of the country's infrastructure system, the PPP model could be the best solution to correct the problem. She added that the use of the PPP mechanism to carry out infrastructure projects has became a global trend to upgrade, operate and maintain infrastructure. Adeosum stated:

“Despite the benefit associated with PPP, there are challenges militating against the use of PPP in Nigeria which include limited number of PPP projects that are currently being procured at the Federal level."

”The role of MDAs in the delivery of infrastructure projects, how to expand the use of PPPs to different infrastructure sectors remains a challenge."

“President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration supports PPPs Agenda and pledged that the government will continue to create a conducive environment for PPPs to thrive in the country,”

This year we have announced that the Plateau State Government, Nigeria, through the Project Implementation Unit, launched a tender process to hire advisors for the Jos Main Market PPP project. The government has plans to redevelop and upgrade the market to promote economic activities.

Previously, in December 2015, after the termination of the concession granted to Bi-Courtney Highway Services Limited, the Federal Government decided to reconstruct the Lagos-Ibadan expressway as a traditional procurement through Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC), cancelling the previous plans to carry out the project under the PPP model.
