Spain-based engineering consultancy IDOM has completed the feasibility study on the Commuter Rail and Road Interconnection Vial project in Guatemala City.
According to the studies the system to be used is a Light Rail (LRT), which will have a commercial speed of 28 kilometers per hour.
The study estimates the cost of constructing the 20-station north-south line from "Centranorte" (zone 18) to "Calzada Atanasio Tzul" (zone 12) to reach certain US$770 million.
Running on a largely segregated alignment, trams would carry 400 passengers and the line would be integrated with the city’s Transmetro bus rapid transit network. The project also involves the upgrade of the adjacent road.
Among the benefits offered by the project are savings in times of travel, reduction of greenhouse gases and those benefits related to users safety and comfort.
Guatemala's Agencia Nacional de Alianzas para el Desarrollo de la Infraestructura Económica (ANADIE) intends to deliver the project under PPP scheme on a design, build, finance, operation and maintenance (DBFOM) basis.
This project is part of a portfolio of nine PPP projects that ANADIE published in early March 2016. The rest of the projects specifically are:
Guatemala City State Administrative Center. The project entails the design, build, finance, operation and maintenance of the building complex on a DBOM basis. The project will be developed in Tegucigalpa where the old central train station is currently located. The total project investment is estimated at US$240 million. The tender for the project was launched in 2014.
Tecún Umán Intermodal Dry Port. The project entails the design, build, finance, operation and maintenance of a train-truck and truck-truck terminal on a DBOM basis.
