The Civil Aviation Ministry of India has approved the development of three new greenfield projects located in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

The Steering Committee, headed by Civil Aviation Secretary R.N Choubey, discussed the proposals for four new airport projects. After the last meeting of the committee, it recommended approval to three projects including Bhogapuram, Dagadarthi (Nellore) and Orvakallu (Kurnool) airports.

The Nellore airport will be also taken up in the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode and it will be constructed on 2,600 acres of land located near Dagadarthi, 30 km North of Nellore in Andhra Pradesh. Ovarkallu project will be taken by the government itself. Nellore airport and Orvakallu airport will be developed under a low cost airport model with an investment standing at INR880 million (US$13 million) each. Nellore Airport is expected to handle 1.9 million passengers p/a by 2045, and Orvakallu Airport is projected is expected to handle 81,000 passengers.
