Caixa Econômica Federal and Brazil national development bank (BNDES) have closed financing for a toll road in Mato Grosso do Sul.
Caixa Econômica Federal signed a financing agreement for the duplication works of the highway BR-163/MS. For this contract, the bank invested BRL527 million (US$163 million) and the BNDES financed BRL210 million (US$65 million).
The highway BR-163/MS is fully inserted in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, beginning on the border with state of Mato Grosso, and ending on the border with the state of Parana. The total length highway in this lot is 847.2 km.
In December 2013, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff signed the project, which was awarded to Brazilian group CCR, which is expected to invest about BRL3.4 billion (US$1.46 billion) to carry out the construction of additional lanes of traffic.
CCR, through its subsidiary Companhia de Participacao em Concessoes, offered to charge the lowest toll rate. CCR offered to charge BRL4.38 (US$1.89) per 100 kilometers, about half of the ceiling price that was set by the tender documents.
Doubling the highway will benefit 1.3 million people and 21 South Mato Grosso towns.
The highway concessions was awarded as part of the government's Logistics Investment Program, which mulled concessioning several federal highways.
According to the vice president of CAIXA Government, Paulo José Galli:
"This is an important funding for regional development. We have been focused in the investment of infrastructure recently. The transaction strengthens the role of CAIXA, which is promoting the development of large infrastructure needed in Brazil."
