Argentina's Ministry of Transport and Pubic Works has launched the tender for a new commuter rail network to service the Greater Buenos Aires metropolitan area.
The launch ceremony was attended by representatives of some 300 companies from twenty countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, Russia, Portugal, Canada, Germany, Germany, Japan, China, France, Brazil and Italy.
The proposed Red de Expresos Regionales (RER) network will have an estimated investment of US$2.3 billion and will improve transport links between the national capital and surrounding areas.
According to Transport Minister Guillermo Dietrich, the government is looking to develop the project via public-private partnerships and it is now looking for interested private sector partners.
The railway project will involve the construction of 20 kilometers of tunnels and a total of 8 new underground stations which will interconnect 6 existing passenger lines in the Greater Buenos Aires metropolitan area. This first stage of the RER will connect the three largest rail lines in Buenos Aires, thanks to an 11-kilometer tunnel under 9 de Julio Avenue and two new underground stations in the Constitución terminal and below the emblematic Obelisco.
The project will benefit aboout 1 million people that commute to the capital every day and the 10m that live the Greater Buenos Aires Area.
The Ministry of Transportation of Argentina has published a call for tenders for the design, construction, expansion, improvement, repair, remodeling, operation, maintenance and commercial exploitation of the Network of Highways and Safe Routes PPP Project Stage 1.
