Dubai’s Mohammed bin Rashid (MBR) Stadium could be procured as a PPP after the Emirate’s Department of Finance was reluctant to finance the development.
The MBR Stadium was previously being considered for tender as an EPC contract.
The 60,000-capacity arena will be capable of holding international sports events like athletic meetings and football tournaments, and will be named after His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The development will also include training facilities, practice pitch and warm up areas, a 5,000-space car park, museum, multi-purpose sports hall, shops, restaurants, and plaza areas for the public to enjoy.
The project will be constructed in Al Aweer - behind Mushrif Park
The stadium is projected to be the largest stadium in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The project total cost amounts to AED3 billion (US$817 million).
No date has been put on completion for the stadium.
As part of the announcement, plans for a Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Award for excellence in school sports, the Sheikh Hamdan Initiative for Community Sport, a state-of-the-art Dubai International Sports Medicine Centre, a museum, and a Champions Of Academies Programme were also unveiled.
