Korea Rail Network Authority (KRNA) announced last month that it has been selected as a preferred bidder for a high-speed rail management project in Thailand.
The project is one of Eastern Economic Corridor´s megaprojects and was ordered by the government agency "Eastern Economic Corridor Office of Thailand" (EECO), which is in charge of planning and implementing development project in three provinces southeast of Bangkok - Rayong, Chachoengsao and Chonbur.
The project is being implemented on public-private partneship (PPP) basis and involves the development of a 220km high-speed rail line, linking three airports - Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports in Bangkok, and U-Tapao Internaitonal airport. It is planned to be opened in 2023. The total cost of the PPP is USD 7.4 billion.
The consortium led by KRNA was selected to manage the high-speed rail line. The consortium comprises 13 companies including Team Group of Thailand. The management project costs KRW 156 billion (USD 126 million).
In October last year the development of the HSR line linking the three airports was awarded by the Government of Thailand to Charoen Pokphand Holding-led consortium. The consortium will be responsible for building the high-speed rail network.
