The Flemish Government in Belgium through the government transport company “De Lijn” has launched the renovation project for the interchange at R0 ring around Brussels and A201 highway. The current turbine type interchange is too large in relation to the traffic produced, which will be replaced by a Single Point Interchange (SPI). The bridges of the roads are also in poor condition and need urgent replacement.
The new interchange will improve the flow of traffic with a reduction in traffic jams. SPI is a unique way to organize an entrance and exit complex, where all traffic converges in the middle and is settled at only one traffic-controlled intersection. Thanks to such an SPI, all infrastructure can be constructed in a much more compact manner, which optimizes space consumption and creates more space for the Airport Tram and frees up additional space for bicycle highways and the green-blue network.
This decision by the Flemish Government begins the process of the search for a consortium of contractors who want to finance, execute and maintain the works of the new interchange. This will be done using Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. In addition to financing and carrying out the work, the private partner will also provide maintenance for 30 years. The Flemish Government will pay an availability fee for 30 years.
The works are planned to start in 2022.
