Kuwait hires HSBC to structure a $3.3 billion solar power plant as a PPP

Kuwait has hired HSBC to structure a 280-MW concentrated solar power (CSP) plant in Al-Abdaliya as a Public Private PArtnership. The project will be located near the capital city.

Construction of the solar thermal power plant will require total investment of about KWD 926.75 million (US$3.3 billion).

The Finance Ministry's technical team is expected to float the venture for tendering, under to the rules of Kuwait's Public Private Partnership (PPP) programme, in collaboration with the Ministry of Electricity and Water.

This project would be the first of its kind in Kuwait. Kuwait aims to derive 10% of its total electricity mix from renewables by 2020.

The Abdaliya Integrated Solar Combined Cycle Project was submitted to Kuwait's Partnerships Technical Bureau (PTB) Higher Committee, as part of an unsolicited proposal.

The total capacity of the power plant will be 280 MW, with a solar contribution of 60 MW.
