Kerala identifies private partner for health & hospitality complex

Governent sources have recently announced that it is close to find a private partner to begin the first phase of the Global Ayurveda Village project, a public-private participation (PPP) project located in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of the state of Kerala.

The US$23 million Global Ayurveda Village(GAV) project is an industrial and health care PPP complex which wil be completed in two phases in Thonnakkal and Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram.

Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KInfra), the government agency involved in the project, and the private partner are expected to hold discussions about the project along February.

In the case that everything goes as planned, a MoU (memorandum of understanding) will be signed and a special purpose vehicle (SPV) will be created to run the project.

The GAV aims to incorporate modern scientific developments in diagnostic and all other treatment aspects mixed with with local traditional medicine in order to improve significantly the state health infrastructure through a public-private-partnership (PPP) approach.

The project is the first large and systematic roll-out of hospitals under the PPP mode in India. The project is expected to attract private investments of between US$30-50 million. In the past, IFC has worked with the government of Odisha to promote private sector-led growth in the strategic sectors of agribusiness and tourism and implemented PPP projects in sectors such as energy-efficient street-lighting and solid waste management.IFC's committed portfolio in India is over US$5 billion as of June 30, 2015.
