Kathmandu plans parking PPP

Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) plans to carry out an underground parking project at Tundikhel Khulamanch, with capacity for 2,000 light vehicles.

The project, to be developed under a public private partnership (PPP) model, has an estimated value from NPR2.55 billion (US$21 million) to RNP3.79 billion (US$35 million).

Nest Pvt. Ltd., the company that did the feasibility study, proposed two models for the parking project.

The first model consists of a two-storey structure capable to accommodate 446 four-wheelers and 1,500 two-wheelers. The second one, involves the construction of a three-storey parking with capacity for 798 four-wheelers and 1,501 two-wheelers

The design of the project includes the existing open space at the surface level improving physical structure. The total area for the construction will take 23,133 square meters

The project will reduce congestion in the capital through easing the pressure on existing parking spaces.

According to sources KMC Executive Officer Rudra Singh Tamang said:

“Parking is a big headache in much of the core city area and Khulamanch has been in use since a long time as a place for staging political demonstrations and other activities. The feasibility study is done and KMC has already decided to develop the parking facility as soon as possible.”
