After 4 years of intense work, we are happy to announce that eeef’s project, the improvement of the energy efficiency of the entire fluid production and distribution system of the University Hospital S. Orsola-Malpighi in Bologna, has been scuccessfully completed. After achieving final commissioning, the inauguration is planned for Friday, 20th of October 2017.
To refresh the memories, the project entity Progetto ISOM signed a concession agreement with the university hospital. In May 2013, the eeef provided a project bond and VAT bond facility of €31.8 m. The EE measures included the adoption of energy efficient equipment (mainly centrifugal chillers and absorbers), the reconstruction of heat distribution networks, the renovation of heat exchange substations and the inclusion of a tri-generation plant for the combined production of cooling, heat and power (CCHP).
This upgrade of the energy system of the university hospital has been the biggest energy efficiency upgrade in Italy completed as part of a PPP with an innovative financing structure. For the local public healthcare, it is a significant step forward, as the university hospital is one of the largest hospitals (1,758 beds), making it a model for other hospitals to follow. The project won the CESEF Energy Efficiency Award 2015 in the financial category. We will take this opportunity and make a video at the project site promoting it as a best-in-class project to improve healthcare conditions for patients as well as the working environment for staff providing medical services. We will share it with you once completed.
